Pair of Upholstered Walnut Mid-Century Chairs Attributed to Milo Baughman for James Inc.
An excellent example of sleek Mid-Century Modern design, this pair of complementary chairs feature geometric sides with sharply angled arms and back, simple walnut frames with tapered legs, and tufted back cushions. Based on previous owner history and our research, we believe these chairs to be King and Queen lounge chairs designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin’s early company James Inc. The chairs were reupholstered in a thick cream fabric in 1994, during which we believe the original labels were removed.
Since 1953, Thayer Coggin has carved out a distinct identity in the home furnishings market through a commitment to timeless modern design. Coggin was the founder of James Manufacturing, a company that specialized in sleeper sofas and rocking chairs. Through founder Thayer Coggin’s vision and Distinguished Design Award honoree Milo Baughman’s creations, Thayer Coggin has amassed a collection of some of the most recognizable furniture designs in the world.
Milo Baughman (1923-2003) was a pioneer in modern design and one of the leading modern furniture designers of the second half of the 20th century. Baughman’s uniquely American designs are forward-thinking and distinctive, yet unpretentious. The relaxed and timeless quality of his highly influential work continues to be collected and reinvented and revived by designers around the world. Pieces from Milo Baughman’s Collection for Thayer Coggins have been bench-made in High Point, NC since the 1970s.
