Description
This 1741 hand-colored engraving by Jacobus Houbraken depicts Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, one of the most influential statesmen of Tudor England. When Henry VIII ascended the throne in 1509, Wolsey became the king’s almoner, quickly rising in power to dominate both political and ecclesiastical affairs by 1514. The portrait, framed with ornate symbols of authority and learning, reflects Wolsey’s commanding role as cardinal and chief advisor to the crown.
