4×7 Silk and Wool Handknotted Area Rug

This beautiful wool rug is entirely handmade with wool and silk. It has a navy blue field of color and a pink primary border, flanked by smaller cream boarders. The art and craftsmanship of handmade rugs often go underappreciated. The process begins with shearing, washing, dyeing, and spinning wool into yarn. The true artistry starts when a designer creates the rug’s pattern, which skilled craftsmen then bring to life using a technique called knotting. Depending on complexity, it can take one to four months—or even up to two years—to complete a rug. Knot density varies, with lower-quality rugs featuring around 80 knots per square inch, while the finest have over 300. After knotting, the rug is washed to set the colors, dried in sunlight, and trimmed to a uniform pile. Each step requires immense manual effort, with hundreds of hours invested in crafting each rug.
