“Skyscape” Oil Pastel by Aleah Koury
“Aleah Koury received a Bachelor of Arts studying ceramics at the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1975. He continued his education at the University of Southern Illinois at Edwardsville and graduated in 1980 with a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking. During those years in the Masters Program, he researched innovative lithographic techniques. For several years thereafter, he lectured and taught college courses in drawing, form and color, and commercial art. In 1983, he opened his private studio. He has had numerous exhibitions and is represented in many private and corporate collections.
Aleah Koury is an impressionist with a contemporary flair. Like the impressionists of the 1800’s Koury relies on the sensory use of color. He creates atmospheric pastels that simulate landscapes with subtle horizons separating the earth, water and sky. With these simple elements, Koury evokes a mood that is soft but intense.
Artist Philosophy: Koury’s artistic philosophy reflects a recurrent theme of three basic elements–fire, water and earth. In his earlier ceramic work, Koury manipulated the physical elements themselves; today his mode of expression has evolved to two-dimensional pastels that re-create fire, water and earth through symbolic imagery.”
