Early 1900’s Oil on Canvas ‘Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window’ after Vermeer
Signed Raehie Sack on the back of the frame and initialed on canvas H.R.H. The original painting resides in the Old Masters Picture Gallery at the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden and was completed in 1657–59. For many years, the attribution of the painting— a young Dutch woman reading a letter before an open window—was lost. First Rembrandt and then Pieter de Hooch were credited for the work before it was properly identified in 1880. After World War II, the painting was briefly in possession of the Soviet Union.
